About Anna Nagy

Anna (1985) is an Italo-Hungarian photographer and documentary filmmaker.

Born in Budapest, she has been living and working in Rome since 2006. She discovered photography as a child, using her father’s camera and turning the bathroom into a darkroom. After earning a PhD in ancient philosophy, she shifted her focus to professional photography and video editing, which she studied in Budapest, Rome, and New York. She has collaborated with television networks, production companies, cultural institutes, and museums in Italy and abroad. She has also taught documentary filmmaking and worked in research, videography, photography, and the entire post-production process.

Her photographic work has been included in exhibitions and catalogues in Hungary, Italy, and Spain. In 2023, she received the LILT Award for contemporary photography.

In my work, I often focus on the representation of objects removed from their social context, which, in the silence of their solitude, speak of their lived experience and finitude. Through photography, I seek to create a space of attention that acknowledges their vulnerability, history, and dignity. It is not a call against abandonment: even in carefully maintained institutional places, such as museums or churches, these objects seem (or perhaps not!) to await a gaze willing to pause and observe them, engaging in dialogue with their complexity.
